![]() ![]() ![]() As an American citizen, I see this as very sad evidence that they are being misled by their political and religious leaders, similar to the way in which the Japanese people were misled by their leaders at the end of WWII. The mistrust and hatred even extends to Muslims who live in or are educated in the USA. This book was published in 1996, so it was before Desert Storm/Shield, the war in Afghanistan, the extended war in Iraq, etc. One important message (to me), is the expression of the hatred the people in the Arab countries in the Middle East have for the USA. Hayate has studied and work in the USA and is on a grant to study in Tunisia. Although set in Tunisia, Hayate is from Lebanon, but cannot return because it isn't safe. Accad writes about several young women in Tunisia, one of whom is the main character Hayate. I've given this book 4 stars, not because I "liked" it or really enjoyed it, but because I think there are important messages in it. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() See Vorkosigan Saga timeline for the standard timeline of the saga. It was the second novel written in the series, after Shards of Honor. On the strength of The Warrior's Apprentice, Baen Books agreed to a three-book deal to include the two other novels. Lois Bujold wrote two books ( Shards of Honor and The Warrior's Apprentice) and was working on a third ( Ethan of Athos) before The Warrior's Apprentice was accepted (after four rejections). Shards of Honor, Barrayar, and Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen concern Miles' parents, while " Dreamweaver's Dilemma", Falling Free and Ethan of Athos are set in the same universe as the other books but do not involve Miles or any of his family. Soviet Milk consists of these two women telling their stories in short alternating sections, manifesting in its form the intimacy and distance of what the daughter calls their ‘two parallel worlds’. This mother is also a daughter, born to a woman who resolved to forget the independent Latvia of her youth, and a father who refused to forget that Latvia condemned him to the gulag. These two women are never named: the first, born in Riga in 1969 in the early years of Leonid Brezhnev’s rule over the Soviet Union, is the daughter of the second, born when Riga was liberated from the Nazis at the end of the Second World War. Birth reminds us that we are always dependent upon another to know the truth of who we are, something few of us ever come to terms with. ‘I don’t remember 22 October 1944,’ says the second, ‘but I can reconstruct it.’ They can only reconstruct what happened because these are the days on which they were born. ‘I don’t remember 15 October 1969,’ says the first. ![]() Soviet Milk by Nora Ikstena opens with two women who cannot remember. ![]() ![]() ![]() “Let’s say something pseudo-awful has befallen you-a safe bet for any human unit thinking about a memoir,” she writes. ![]() ![]() Karr (who wrote her own recovery memoir, Lit ) seems to take it for granted that the aspiring memoirists reading her book want to wrestle with some trauma, though she tries not to encourage self-pity. Notably, her most contemptuous reviewers were men, who were seemingly oblivious to the misogynistic element to their insistence that some life experiences ought to remain unspoken-especially the painful sexual experiences of women. Yardley deplored The Kiss (in one of three pieces pummeling it) as a “slimy, repellent, meretricious, cynical” offering to the “gods of publicity.” Harrison was dunned for not making her memoir sexy enough in Vanity Fair, while the New Republic scolded her for transmitting her father’s abuse to her own children by daring to write about it. Harrison’s was a book people talked about for months and about which every person in the book business felt obliged to take a position. ![]() As Bennett pointed out, a very similar story, recently published on Jezebel, went viral, but still garnered nothing in comparison to the uproar that greeted The Kiss. Eileen Atkins does a great job, but then they all do. Much of the fun of the movie is the ridiculous level of misery and squalor represented by Cold Comfort Farm, which is a parody of the sort of grim worlds one can find from writers like Dickens. ![]() In a way she seems to be the personification of British imperialism, although that's probably a bit of a stretch. Flora, excellently portrayed by Beckinsale, is pretentious and rather smug but also well-meaning and likable. ![]() Often these movies rely on a central character who is magical, or has great charm and a love for life, but Flora achieves her ends through pure English practicality, and it is very amusing to see someone approaching misery as a mess to be cleaned up. Absolutely terrific movie is an interesting take on the popular theme of people who come into a mess of unhappiness and create joy. ![]() ![]() Here are my statistics, 267 approvals with feedback sent for 217 which gives me an 81%.
